How to measure your child
Measure first, it takes 2 minutes. Kids' sizes vary from brand to brand, so please don't order by age alone. A dirndl bodice is fitted, so chest is the most important number.
You'll need a soft measuring tape. No tape? Use a piece of string, then lay it flat against a ruler. Have your daughter wear thin clothes or just a T-shirt.
- Height: Shoes off. Have her stand straight with her back against a wall. Lay a book flat on top of her head, mark the wall, and measure from the floor to the mark.
- Chest: Have her lift her arms out like an airplane. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of her chest, right under the arms. Then let her lower her arms. Keep the tape level and snug, not tight.
- Waist: Ask her to bend to one side. The crease that forms is her natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Measure around it while she stands normally.
- Hip (for sizes 10 and up): Have her stand with feet together. Measure around the widest part of her hips and bottom.
Then: find her chest in the chart first, and check that her height fits the same row.

Between two sizes? Choose the larger size. A dress that is a little long can be hemmed. A bodice that is too tight can't be let out.
- Chest and height point to different sizes? Go by chest. If the larger size is long on her, a simple hem fixes it.
- Slim build? Pick by chest and height. The apron sash ties at the waist for a neat look.
- Event more than 3 months away? Measure again a few weeks before, or choose the larger size. Kids can grow an inch in a season.
- Don't size up two sizes. A dirndl that is too big slips off the shoulders and swamps her in photos.
